STRATEGIC PRIORITY

Expand Access to Food is Medicine Interventions

Food is Medicine programs seek to establish food and nutrition interventions within healthcare settings, emphasizing improved health outcomes and intentionally addressing food and nutrition insecurity. As healthcare organizations across South Carolina become more invested in addressing patients’ health-related social needs, like food insecurity, coordinated Food is Medicine programs assist in navigating screening and referral processes, build relationships between healthcare systems and community-based food organizations, and provide intentional nutrition support to patients and their families. These approaches center on access to nutritious food as foundational to promoting good health and addressing poor outcomes across a multitude of health issues.

The SC Food Policy Council (SCFPC) is advancing the production and consumption of healthy foods in South Carolina through education and strategic policy planning. SCFPC serves as a forum for members to share their concerns and progress on programs and initiatives concerning the food system in South Carolina and collaborate on making improvements. Supporting the work of SCFPC is one of six priority areas for Healthy Palmetto, a statewide collaborative focused on healthy eating and active living.
