Select Comfort completes their walking challenge!

Employees from Select Comfort, a business in Columbia SC, completed their walking challenge in January with a total of 34,654,549 steps. The winning team walked an average of 882,586 steps.  Thanks to Silvia King for organizing the challenge and encouraging your coworkers to live healthier lifestyles.

Walking Challenges/Clubs

Spring is here and it is a great time to start a walking challenge or club. Final Authority Christian Church, Midlands Technical College, St. Peters Baptist Church, AG First, Abundant Living Churches in Pickens County and many more have started (or are starting) their challenges and they’re seeing great results. It’s simple. Contact Ava Dean at 803-296-5777 or e-mail ava.dean@palmettohealth.org for more details.

Personal Counseling and Web-Based Strategies Show Modest Success

A study from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health has shown that brief monthly counseling helps adults keep weight off.  The study initially enrolled 1,685 participants, and 1,032 of those lost an average of 18.7 pounds during the initial six months. The group was randomly divided into three sections and participants who received personal counseling “retained an average weight loss of 9.2 pounds, compared to an average of 7.3 pounds for those using the Web-based intervention and 6.4 for those in the self-directed group.” The March 27 press release can be found at http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov.

Electronic Updates: Our next Update (July) will go out electronically to those who provided an e-mail address on their walking program registration form. If you want to be added to the e-mail list, contact Ava Dean at ava.dean@palmettohealth.org or send an e-mail via the Web site under “walking program.”
